Macomber

A crowd of natives has just carried Francis Macomber triumphantly into camp. Macomber, a good-looking athletic type, has just blown it on a lion hunting adventure and now everyone knows hes a coward. Macombers married woman cant contain her resentment and humiliation about her husbands breakdown on the hunt. This is not a proud moment for the Macombers. Shmoop Editorial Team. National Council of Teachers of English, 1971. 31-35. The English Journal. Web. 12 Apr. 2013. I. Francis Macomber and his wife Marg aret (usually referred to as Margot), are on a big-game sa removedi in Africa, guided by professional hunter Robert Wilson. Earlier, Francis had panicked when a wounded lion charged him. Margot mocks Macomber for this act of cowardice, and it is implied that she sleeps with Wilson. The next solar day they hunt cow. When they find the buffalo, it charges Macomber. Francis, faced with a buffalo, suddenly cash in ones chipss a man of courage, but his shots are too high. Wilson fires at the beast as well, but it keeps charging. Macomber kills the buffalo at the last blurb. At the same time, Margot had also fired a shot from the car, which instead hits Macomber in the skull and kills him. For once, they are both on the same side, injure at the same bu ll, but tragically she kills the man she was trying to save.In The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, Hemingway theatrical roles his famously sparse prose style and villains with the moral make-up of animals to raise the ironic truth that happiness is fleeting and had better not depend upon others. II. The narrator furnishes details, nothing more, but packs in those details is all the psychological purification of a session with a psychoanalyst. In The Short Happy Life, a numerous basic actions can go a great distance. The sentences are sure as shooting not fancy, but they reveal a ton about the characters. For example The mess boy had started them already, lifting the bottles out of the canvas cooling bags that sweated wet in the raise that blew through the trees that shaded the populates (p. 1). Here, Hemingway speaks volumes in one sentence the feeling in the air is apparent, he sets the visual scene, and he conveys ideas of class and environment. Readers know where they are, and what kind of people they are dealing with. Hemingway also lets the dialogue do a lot of the work. That way readers get to know the characters through what they say instead of having Hemingway tell them what to think. At the storys opening, for example, Margot says, Ill have a gimlet too. I need something (p. 1). This unadorned expression gives the reader their initial impression of Margot She will drink because she needs something but something for what? Something, readers soon find out, to slow the rage and disappointment over Macombers failure and something as in my husband gave me nothing, so give me something. Lastly, this short sentence says Macombers wife, not Margot, so readers know that this mans wife needs something, and she needs it because of him.Thats a whole lot of meaning for eight short words. He omits things because he trusts the readers to be active, and to understand what he is saying indirectly. Hemingway packs a lot of unsaid things into the actual wor ds on the page. III Animals A technique that emerges as one of the most impressively effective is Hemingways use of animals, for behind the scenes of the five-act tragedy that constitutes The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber stalks a troupe of inhuman supporting actors whose effect on the understanding of Hemingways story is crucial.Wether in the from of a charging lion or, more subtly, in Margot Macombers back-handed reference to those big cowy things that jump like hares (p. 9), Hemingway uses his animal menagerie as a standard against which to assess and evaluate his human actors. Francis Macombers safari turns out to be quite different from a romantic adventure out of Martin Johnsons storybook Macombers adversaries are a far cry from Old Simba the lion, the buffalo, Tembo the elephant (p. 22) and the Natural History Museum that the columnist describes.Hemingway suggests here that Macomber has emerged from the fairytale world of high society into the real world of tooth and claw. It is in conjunction with the animals they themselves hunt that readers can best evaluate Robert Wilson, Francis Macomber, and his wife. Wilson emerges as the professional. He is self-confident and almost detached from the jungle world of his employers. From Margarets point of wad he seems a killer, but his flat, blue, machine gunners eyes (p. 8) ironically seem to raise Wilson into a position of dominance over the evil struggle for supremacy that he witnesses.Margot Macomber, on the other hand, is deeply enmeshed in this struggle. Her husband labels her a bitch (p. 22) after her return from Wilsons tent and refers to her bitchery (p. 10) elsewhere in the story, but more specific than this implicitly negative criticism of Macomber is Hemingways explicit use of animals as a verbal arm in the mouth of Margot. To Francis self-punishment Margot adds criticism of her own. When Francis passes her some cooked eland he shot, she scoffs at his offering with the comment Theyre the b ig cowy things that jump like hares, arent they? (p. 9). Rubbing common salt into his wounded ego, she facetiously asks, Theyre not dangerous, are they? (p. 9). All Francis has been able to shoot by this point in the safari are relatively sinless animals, and he has proved himself a coward in the face of the only dangerous game he has encountered. Although Hemingway links Margot with no specific animal, she does materialize as the abridgement of all the most dangerous qualities of female carnivores. To Robert Wilson she is a typical American woman, one of the hardest in the world the hardest, the cruelest, the most predatory, nd the most attractive (p. 8). externally she is so enameled in that American female cruelty (p. 9) that she seems even more insensitive than Robert Wilson. While she is seen as cruel and predatory, her husband is compared with a rabbit and is at the end linked with the lion whose head is blown off by Wilson. Hemingways subtle identification of Macomber wi th the lion he is hunting serves a far more important purpose than symbolically to foreshadow his death at the hands of his wife.Indeed, it is through Macombers links with both the lion and the buffalo that readers become aware of his transition from emotional adolescence to manhood. Initially, the lions bravery and determination are used strictly as a contrast to Macombers rabbit-like trembling. In his struggle for survival the lion with half his head shot away kept crawling on toward the crashing, blasting thing that had destroyed him (p. 21). He stared rebelliously with yellow eyes, narrowed with hate (p. 19) similarly, Francis Macomber found that, of all the many men that he had hated, he hated Robert Wilson the most (p. 3). Momentarily facing the challenge present by the lion, Macomber feels sick at his stomach (p. 16) and cannot control his shaking. The fear was still there like a cold, slimy hollowin all the emptiness where once his office had been and it made him feel sick (p. 11). The difference between Macomber and the lionis suggested by the nature of their respective wounds. Macombers psyvchological wound can be traced ultimately to his overall weakness and, more recently, to the effects of his huntress wife. But the lions wound is more a red badge of courage incurred in combat.Instead of fear, a . 30-06 220 grain immobile bullet causes the sudden hot scalding nausea (p. 15) in the lions stomach. In contrast, the nausea of fear experienced by Macomber is one of nothingness. The lion is disoriented down and fights his fate to the end, whereas Macomber has collasped internally, gone to pieces nervously (p. 8). Macomber bolts like a rabbit, where in the lion all of him, pain, sickness, hatred and all of his remaining force out, was tightening into an absolute ingress for a rush (p. 19) directly at his attackers. In death he becomes almost human. Macomber becomes, by his own admission, a rabbit. But Macomber changes. His metamorphosis from rabbit and laddy-buck occurs after the second crossing of the stream that separates the camp from the hunting ground. Just as we view the initial conflict through the lions stream-of-consciousness as he watched Macomber depress from the car, so we now see Macomber observe three huge, black animals looking almost cylindrical in their long heaviness, like big black storage tank cars (p,27). The situation has been inverted.Where the lion saw the car and its passengers in animal terms, bulking like some super-rhino (p. 15), Macomber sees the animal in car terms. Hemingways inversion of style implies the vicissitude of Macomber to a lion-like figure and foreshadows his courageous birth into his all-too-short happy life. The hunter becomes the hunted the man with newly achieved lion-like qualities falls prey to the predatory wife who has seen the change in her husband (p. 33) and herself has become white and ill with fear at what it portends. In Macombers death he is subtly linked with his o wn last victim, the buffalo Francis Macomber site now, face down, not two yards from where the buffalo lay on his side.. (p. 36). Linked with the buffalo both in the manner of death and by physical proximity, Macomber has, at last, achieved the transition from rabbit to lion, to bull, and to manhood. Hemingways subtle use of animals as an evaluative device has helped to turn what would have been a story of pitiableness into one that approaches tragedy.Hemingway is very careful with these details so that the reader can fully explore the extent to which Macomber has sunk. (margot dominant)In addition to Macombers embarrassed cowardice, he watches as Margot kisses Wilson on the mouth, calling him the scenic red-faced Mr. Wilson. After Margot returns from sleeping with Wilson, readers learn about the reasoning for her marriage to Frances. She is too beautiful for Francis to divorce her, and Francis has too much money for her to ever pass away him. When Macomber reminds Margot the there wasnt going to be any of that. You promised there wouldnt be, readers realize that this deceit has been going on for a long time. In days past Macomber has never been enough for his wife, but being here, on the safari, was supposed to change all that. Yet Margos betrayal is so open and punish in such defiance that Macomber gets to know how very much his cowardice has changed everything. Margot will continue to press her advantage until the end, when she notices that Macomber is gaining courage and a strong ace of his own manhood. The shooting of the first buffalo marks the beginning of the tremendous change in Macomber. In all of his life, he has never felt so remarkable. On the other hand, Margot sits very white faced. She realizes that Macomber is changing, and she fears this change. She fears this change because she is losing psychological control over Macomber. She knows that if Macomber finally gains a sense of manhood, he will have the strength to leave her. She tries to taunt him, but he is oblivious to her existence. She now knows that his future does not include her.

This is Water Summary Essay

Wallace delivered the Kenyon College commencement address that was not the typical commencement address you would normally hear at a graduation. He starts off his voice communication by telling a story having the idea that even the most important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about(predicate). He talks about living in the adult world that these soon to be graduates will enter and how it can be ere dull at times. And how learning about how to work out about the choice we make in our life, the choices we make will impact our life whether it be a good impact, or a bad impact. Wallace delivers this speech (in a way to get these graduates not necessarily discouraged) giving the former students a face of reality that life is dull when you go through the selfsame(prenominal) thing every day. And that when people go through the same thing day in and day out people tend to forget about the other(a)s around us.When forgetting about the other people around us occurs, Wallace believes that makes us believe that we are the center of the universe. This way of thinking as Wallace states is to be our scorn setting where we tend to block everyone our except for ourselves and if anyone gets in our way, then they must the ones at fault. Wallace also states, if you genuinely learn to pay attention, then you will exist there are other options. We have the choice to think of those other options, but we also have he choice to not think of those other options.Choosing the option to pay attention to the others around us and not be a prisoner of our own brain could possibly let ourselves live happier lives. Having sentiency as Wallace stated, Is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive In the adult world day In and day out. But, your education really Is the Job of a lifetime. In conclusion, Wallace believes that we have choices to be aware of and to really think of the choices we make.

Environmental Studies Essay

The community of the world has been on an upward trend for the most part of the past many years. The rapid rise in the universe in the past had been attributed to factors like improved medical care and good nutrition. However, the statistics appear to be changing as the 21st century wears on. in that location has been recorded a decrease in the overall global population growth rate such that although there is still a growth in the population, the rate is reducing. However, the rate is not evenly distributed.Instead, only the developed nations where industrialization and modernity are advanced are experiencing the population slowdown. The developing World still has rising rates of population growth (I. R. C. , 2005). The reduction in the growth rate can be attributed to climatic changes that cod in turn caused bulk to resort to totally new ways of living. There has been a lot of destruction to the atmosphere and the resultant effect has been that some of the plants and animals th at were useful for improving the privilege of the people when included in the diet are now extinct.Global warming has killed many such plant and animal species and the other effects form been that there is an increase in strange, previously uncommon diseases caused by climatic changes which are making more people to die faster than before. Life antepast has also reduced because of these changes (Johansen, 2009). In addition, the lifestyles of people have changed drastically, including having diets that are little healthy such as the consumption of genetically modified substances whose chemical contents are harmful to the body and shorten life. This trend is bound to go on for as long as industrial development is going to continue, declension as the effects of global warming resulting from industrial pollution increase (Vormedal, 2005). New factors are bound to come into play, including increase child mortality and increased resistance to medication available even as new species of pathogens and parasites emerge with changing environmental conditions. It is also expected that more people will be less willing to have children as the pressure on available resources increases, thereby pushing the population growth rate down. With globalization opening up doors of nations, more technologies and immigrants are expected to get in, and not only will there be a real pressure on resources available pushing families to downsize but there will also be a massive movement away from the use of natural, more nutritious food items to those that are ersatz and developed through technology (I. R. C. , 2005). As such are likely to be more harmful to the body, many people will find themselves less fertile while the fertile ones will be less willing to have more than a few children. The few children born will have a reduced life expectancy due to increased diseases and child mortality will be very high. As the figure below shows, the population of Canada has been on a downward trend ever since the start of this century. It is expected that this will go on as the country becomes more industrialized and as global warming becomes more pronounced. By the year 2030, the country will most likely be faced with the problem of having a majority of its population being people over the age of 65 years because the young people are those who are likely to be affected negatively by the forces causing this trend (I. R. C. , 2005).

Kentucky Fried Chicken IMC approach Essay

INTRODUCTIONMarkets by dint ofout the globe have become more complex and sophisticated, and it has become complicated for marketers to reach their bearing markets through direct traditional merchandising. Thus, organisations have acknowledged the increasing importance of applying the integrated merchandising communication (IMC) approach in their marketing strategy. The effective effectuation of the IMC approach can facilitate and enhance an organizations communication based on its product offerings whilst simultaneously taking advantage of the various available promotional tools to strategically reach its target audience. Many South African companies have decided to utilise the IMC approach to maximize their return on investments in marketing and promotion. The fair game of these organisations is to effectively and efficiently apply the promotional tools of the IMC through join ond understanding of its customers while powerfully communicating its product offerings and thus yieldi ng a controlling response with the modern customer to choose its products/services. The IMC process requires marketers to be creative in their approach to communication. Marketers need to think critically of the messages they want to communicate through integrating the elements of the promotional mix which are advertising, direct marketing, interactive marketing, sales promotion and personal selling. The aim of this critical evaluation of the IMC bowel movement is to determine the subprogram of Integrated Marketing Communications being customd at Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in order to acquire brand equity within KFC. This intent can break down into five object glasss as follows, To understand the nature of KFCs market, To determine the need for and the take in of IMC in KFC, To determine the important aspects of IMC in KFC, To determine the barriers in applying IMC in KFC, To study the situation of KFC in the South African market, To analyze and define the significant role of KFC as executed in sales promotion strategies in the fast food South African market. The fast food market is seen with strong exponential growth. The challenge is to develop a competitive edge based on an old need, introducing new and innovative marketing ideas to better the competition. One of the conceptsused by KFC is the Add anticipate marketing campaign. Also, with very intense competition, KFC needs to cut through the clutter using this campaign as a point of difference. The negative stigma on fast foods, regarding health related issues is also a challenge to be lendressed. The communication objectives are identified as to cut through the clutter of brands and create a product that is better than the rest by being different and creating campaigns that go further than just the quality of food being sold. The Add want marketing campaign of KFC will include a thorough discussion of Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC), a brief background of KFC, a comment of the Add fore taste marketing campaign, and a critique of the campaign.BRAND BACKGROUNDKFC launched their Add Hope marketing campaign in October 2013, to highlight innovation Hunger Relief Month and is still running until today due to the immense success. KFC encourages the general public to make a personal contribution toward alleviating starve in South Africa by adding just two rand to your KFC meal. The money obtained from the Add Hope campaign is used in feeding schemes to reduce hunger in all parts of South Africa.TARGET MARKET KFCs Add Hope campaign targets all age groups. When one walks into a KFC store, the Add Hope campaign is advertised everywhere, from in-store counter strips , boards, posters, staff t-shirts, caps, badges to serviettes and even an in store porcelain dolly with a money box at the entrance. This encourages all customers to literally add hope. KFC also allows you to add two rand or more to your meal which goes to the add hope campaign. This is directed to the person p aying for the meal usually an adult whereas the shrimpy dolly with the money box is directed to children as they may find it entertaining to drop a coin or two in the box.The marketing strategy of using the dolly at the entrance of a store in myopinion is brilliant, as it makes one sympathetic towards a barely substantial child. COMPETITORS KFCs competitors is every other food outlet. KFCs is by far the first to think of such a campaign. This campaign does non only benefit them with sales but also benefits the entire nation. Its difficult to get actual competitors in this case as most businesses compete with others for their own benefit. murder IN ITS MARKET The KFC Add Hope campaign is very successful as it is running from October 2013. Consumers have donated over R6 million in R2 coins at KFC restaurants nationwide. This shows that the campaigns performance all over the country was a success and is still striving towards success.MARKETING OBJECTIVES KFCs objective is not to only increase sales but also to help their community and the under privileged through their feeding schemes. Every six seconds a child dies of hunger. KFCs objective is to reduce hunger and poverty nationwide.MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS OBJECTIVES KFCs marketing objective is to make every customer aware of the Add Hope Campaign. This is achieved by advertising the campaign everywhere possible. KFC advertises for the campaign through mass media which is television and radio as well as print media such as billboards, on the serviettes, in store advertising, on the receipt a customer receives after their purchase their meals and as well as the t-shirts and caps that their staff may wear. They also use personal selling, for example when you at the till the cashier may tell you more about the Add Hope campaign or ask if you aspiration to add R2 to your meal for the Add Hope campaign.IMAGE KFCs image has been improved due to this campaign. Consumers now see KFC as a franchise that is not only concerned about their success but also the well being of the community. Consumers find it more overwhelming to purchase their meals from a franchise of this suit as they may feel that they are indirectly making a difference and helping their community in the long run.POSITIONING Positioning is outlined as the art and science of fitting the product or service to one or more segments of the broad market in such a way as to set it meaningfully apart from its competitor. (Book-pg55) KFC achieved this by changing their cultural symbol, Colonel to a child to show that all proceeds from the Add Hope campaign goes to feed a hungry child.REFERENCINGWe Can Change. 2011. Compare and Contrast Gibson’s and Gregory’s theories of perception

Gibsons and Gregorys theories of information both suggest that eye-retina is important for knowledge. The both believe that without eye-retina, a person will non be able to front. This is a common view of both of the theories of perception. The bringing close together is supported by the case of SB. SB was a man who had been blind from cause due to cataracts. When he was 52, he had an operation which restored his sight and hence he could see. Thus, this case has shown the importance of eye-retina for things to be perceived. And therefore, supports both of theories of perception which eye-retina is essential for perception. Gibson believes in the result theories of perception which he use the theory of bottom-up processing to explain visual illusions whereas Gregory believes in the indirect theories of perception and he used the theory of top-down processing to explain visual illusions. The bottom-up are based on the assumption that we work upwards in our analysis of the visual world mildew basic sensory inputs at the bottom level towards the higher, to a greater extent cognitive levels of the brain. The top-down processing theories are based on the assumption that we can totally perceive our visual world accurately if we use stored knowledge and problem-solving skills. Thus, there are differences between their theories of perception. Gregorys indirect theory of perception and Gibsons advocate theory of perception had led to the debate of temperament-nurture. This is a big debate in Psychology whether perception is determined by genetics as proposed by Gibsons theory or whether it is learnt or determined by upbringing and social context as proposed by Gregorys theory. On the one hand, Nativists think that constitution is more(prenominal) important factor which people are the products of their genetics and that we are born with certain behaviours. On the other hand, empiricists think that experience and nurture is the more important factor. They think t hat situational factors and upbringing cede a greater influence on outcome. An eclectic approach might show that it is an interaction between nature and nurture and that neither side can put the full story. It may be that a genetic predisposition to perception exists, but that situational factors alike fix to be in place for it to develop.Apart from the above, there are a few more differences between Gibsons and Gregorys theories of perception. Gregory believes that additional processing is required for perception which round forms of background knowledge is needed to make sense of the environment than just the sensory input while Gibson believes that perception is part of an inbuilt adjustive mechanism for survival which does not rely on stored knowledge or past experience. Gregory believes that expectations have an impact on perceptions which Gibson disagrees. There is empirical evidence supporting the idea of Gregory, and this comes from a study carried out by Simons and Lev in. 50% of the participants failed to realise that there was a switch of people. This is probably due to the fact that the participants had not expected a change of person. Hence, they were unable to perceive it. Furthermore, a study carried out by Selfridge as well as supports the idea of Gregory. Selfridges study demonstrates that our perceptions are mediated by our expectations as people are able to read the figures as the cat. This is because people have the expectations of the cat as they are words in common usage. These studies have shown that people saw what they have been expecting to see. Thus, the study demonstrates that expectations affect perception. And hence suggest that Gregorys theory of perception might be right instead of Gibsons. Gregory also suggests that we use context for our perceptions which Gibson disagrees. There are supporting evidences for Gregorys assumptions. Selfridges study has shown context effects on visual perception. This study suggests that conte xt support perception.Similarly, Boring has demonstrated the use of top-down processing as well as the fact that context influences visual perception. These two studies demonstrate that visual perception is influenced by context. In addition, Gregorys idea is supported by the study carried out by Warren which context influences auditory perception as well. The participants used context to hear the word in the sentence entirely. This shows the importance of context which helps to fill in the missing words. These findings suggested that it may be true that context is requirement for perception to occur successfully. These studies support Gregorys theory instead of Gibsons. Furthermore, Gregorys theory explains how we can make errors in perception. For instance, we do not necessarily see spelling errors in our written work as we word- through-context. Besides, Gregory suggests that we use stored knowledge and past experience to make sense of our visual environment which Gibson does no t agree. Moreover, Gregory suggested that some forms of background knowledge, through learning, are needed to make sense of the environment than just the sensory input as suggested by Gibson.Gregory said that, when looking at the Muller-Lyer figure, the line on the left looks longer than that on the right. He believed that this was because we were using top-down processing and assuming that the figure on the left is like the street corner of a room that we are in, while the figure on the right is like the corner of a building seen from the outside. Hence, this suggested that we use context for our perceptions. He also pointed to the idea of the hollow mask. When we see a hollow mask from the inside, we perceive it as pointing outwards, because this is what we are used to.However, there are problems with Gregorys outlook. Firstly, if we take a derivation of the Muller-Lyer illusion and replace the arrows with circles, we can see that the effect still holds, even though we could not possibly be imagining the corners of rooms or buildings, etc. Thus, Gregorys assumption of the theory of perception might be wrong. Furthermore, Gibson argues that information form visual illusions should not be used because it is a fake stimulant drug that could not happen in the real world which suggested that the theory cannot be applied in real life situation. However, visual illusions do happen in real life such as trains and car wash. Even so, Gibson believes in the direct theory of perception which is an opposing theory to Gregorys. He believes that we do not need prior knowledge to perceive objects correctly. Gibson suggests that perception is shaped by biological inheritance instead of what Gregory has suggested. According to Warren and Hannon, participants were able to make judgements just about direction using dots which support Gibsons optic flow patterns. And this demonstrates that Gibsons theory might be right instead of Gregorys. However, study carried out by Lee and Lishman has shown that adults have more experiences about the world than children and thus has cast doubt upon Gibsons theory. Also, a study carried Hahn, Anderson and Saidpour has demonstrated that regardless of which condition the participants were, they could tell direction and movement. And this finding goes against Gibsons idea of optic flow. Thus, Gibsons theory might not be right, instead, Gregorys theory might be more realistic.

Abuse of power Vs Spiritual Redemption Essay

The Tempest is full of different depicted objects that work perfectly to get down out the mastery of Shakespeare. However, two themes that stand out in the play, and they have been the source of much debate all everyplace the years. Both themes are backed with incredible, pass with flying colors accurate evidence over the dominance of the other. Over the years, scholars have found it hard to settle on one theme being dominant over the other, but with an analysis of the evidence presented on both counts, the decision is left to the reader of the play or the audience for that matter. The first theme that stands out is unearthly redemption and goodwill. It can be explained in the play through the character Prospero whereby he struggles, loses his kingdom, finds a nonher and learns from his past in order not to have record repeat itself. In the world crested by The Tempest, through Prospero, Shakespeare tries to examine the human condition of sin, redemption and goodwill. At the be ginning of the play, the audience is made aware that Prospero was a Duke of Milan but his brother Antonio, with the kings consent, took his Dukedom away from him. During his tenure as Duke, Prospero was more concerned with education and magic than he was feeling his kingdom. For this reason, Antonio was able to take advantage and win over the hearts of the people of Milan, which consequently led to the usurping of Prospero from his dukedom, but with help from the King of Naples.Prospero was then exiled with his daughter Miranda, on a wrecked boat where they ended up on an island. Here, Prospero learned the values of authority by turning Caliban into a slave under his command. At one point, his slave alongside two other men tried to kill him but he manipulated them and changed their minds completely. When the shipwrecked men had been brought to him, he could have chosen to take up his revenge and kill them, but he was kind to them. In so doing, Prospero found redemption for his s in as a previously failed ruler. The other theme that stands out is that of Colonial Abuse of Power. In almost every scene, thither is a portrayal of business office whereby there is a character that has power over the other. The relationship of Prospero and Caliban is that of master and slave and this stands out throughout the play, where Caliban submits to Prospero. The Tempest brings to light the theme of colonization when in 1610, the Sea Adventure to Virginia ended in shipwreck in Bermuda. Also, the anagram of the name Caliban is derived from the name cannibal which shows a difference in cultures. This in any case shows that Caliban was the native of the island that Prospero had asserted himself as king. Propseros relationship with Ariel also demonstrated the intense theme of power. Ariel is a spirit but she is submissive to Prospero, by saying All hail, Great masterIn both themes, there is enough evidence to warrant a discussion, but to my opinion, I think that the theme of s piritual redemption and goodwill is most dominant. Primarily, this is because the use and abuse of power is an age-old tradition that never seizes. However, the act of Prospero showing mercy stands out because as royalty, there is a need to show humility and making decisions not out of feeling, but out of reason. Thus, the theme of spiritual redemption and goodwill is most convincing in all manners and rights.Source document

Gathering Research Data Paper Essay

Within the criminal arbitrator system there are dissimilar types of selective information gathering research methods that can be utilized. The method chosen for this research paper is the email assess method. The proposed research for this paper is job merriment within the police field with emphasis on the patrol completeicers. With patrol officers being the backbone of the police departments the research should be pretty insightful. The main refinement of this research is to pinpoint the patrol officers main dissatisfactions during their workdays. The specific interview structure that w visitation be used is an email questionnaire survey. This type of survey pull up stakes exit and hopefully enable every patrol officer to participate and it will also allow graphical results. Just about every criminal justice case begins and ends with a patrol officer. Beginning with the criminal offense report, to the arrest, and ending at the testifying in court. Although there are m each v arious key players in most cases besides the patrol officer, it is highly unlikely that crime reduction would exist without the patrol officer.Understanding the needs of a patrol officer and what is amiable and displeasing on the job is key to crime reduction. A happy employee does their job successfully and to the best of their ability. An unhappy patrol officer will unimpeachably non complete tasks let alone risk their lives for an different individual. The department has the responsibility to ensure that the majority of its patrol officers are satisfied with their working conditions to proceed silent strikes and to also prevent behavior manifestation. Using an email questionnaire survey would be the interview structure used to conduct the research regarding the employee satisfaction. This survey will involve the simple format of a YES or NO option only.Constructing a different variables list will enable determination of what issues the questions will be based on. This list wil l also ensure that main concerns and topics are covered along with not duplicating any issues. Configuring what type ofdata and data summary is needed will be the next venture followed by figuring out how to word the questionnaire. Taking into consideration patrol officer lingo and technical wording to avoid any biased or compounding variables to each question. Some examples of questions that would be asked are1. Do you intentionally avoid police functions when off duty?2. Do you take a level of pride when wearing your uniform?3. Do you take sick days when you are not ill?4. Do you hide your profession when off duty?5. Do you take extended training courses or classes to avoid fieldwork?6. Do you use cellphones, tablets, or any other devices to entertain yourself while on duty?7. Do you avoid public interaction while on duty?Using these initial questions will not only help me gather data on satisfaction but will also help me gather data on other issues as well. An example of other issues would be the topic of whether or not solution time intertwines with officer satisfaction and how this affects crime statistics. This type of qualitative data gathering is a great advantage because it records attitudes, feelings, and behaviors. (Analyse This Learning To Analyse Qualitative Data, (2008)). As mentioned also opens up new topic areas that were not initially considered. These initial questions are also structured or closed ended questions in which will involve the needed information. Which means the data dispassionate from the answers wont involve thorough answers that need to be explained. In completion of the questionnaire questions, a small group of similar respondents will take a pretest that will point out any confusion or misunderstanding of question formatting and wording. To have the best outcome of participants and to ensure the best results, payment would be offered in the form of extra paid time. This will also ensure a more quantitative data analysis due to a larger number of people responding to the survey. Some researchers believe that rewards and/or incentives given to people who participate in surveys increases response and reliability A tailored forge method or TDM will be used with this email survey question. According to Hagan ((2010)), The tailored design method or TDM, uses multiple contacts seeking response and endorsements to increase response rates by tailoring the survey to thegroup being studied in order to foster trust, increase rewards, and decrease the speak to of participation. This phase would be to get endorsed by the patrol unions to ensure and response, respect, and acceptability of the survey in the patrol officers eyes. These unions were founded and organized to assist and symbolise patrol officers, with the backing of these unions the participation and legitimacy would be highly prosperous. In turn, the unions will be knowledgeable with the results of the survey. One of the main focuses of this survey will be that it is truly an anonymous survey, and that each individual who fills out a survey remains anonymous and has no ties or repercussions from their answers. A few approaches to this could be survey kiosks or ballet boxes. These would allow no log on requirements or have any tracks on keystrokes. It is detrimental that informed consent and confidentiality be withheld and not compromised. According to The Role Of Numeracy In Informed Consent For Surveys ((2009)), Two key ethical issues for survey researchers are obtaining informed consent and maintaining the confidentiality of responses. Informed consent implies that deuce requirements have been met (1) that research participants have been informed about the essential elements of the research, including the risks and benefits of participation, and have understood the information and (2) that they have given their consent to participate. If compromised the survey answers could potentially cause issues with employment or job envi ronments. This type of outcome could cause the survey to become unreliable and null and void.ReferencesAnalyse This Learning to analyse qualitative data. ((2008)).
